The help for Christmas trees had no idea what they were doing. We carried the tree to the front and they didn’t know how to attach it to the roof of our car. I expected them to at least know how to tie it down.

Be sure to pay attention to the cash register showing your actual total versus what the associate types into the credit/debit card machine. Went in today and the guy tried charging me exactly $20 more than the total ($133 vs actual $113). Possibly an accident, since he was on his talking on his cell phone the entire time.

They weren't very nice! 😢 They were throwing away Xmas tree parts, an one was a small tree, it was missing the bottom part on one side, but I would've cut it Past that, and made it an even smaller tree! They got all mad that I asked about it! They got really rude, I asked if I could buy it? An they said NO, and told me I needed to park somewhere else? If you were throwing it away anyway, then why wouldn't you let someone like me have it? I guess I won't have a tree again this year? Not that it matters? But it would've been really nice! Guess they don't have a Christmas spirit? But they DO have 6" poinsettias, for like $3.99! Which is quite cheap! They're beautiful, too! I was driving the lady I take care of, that day, so I didn't Get anything? She got 4 of those poinsettias!

It makes me very happy to be able to have enough space to navigate throughout the store and see the variety of new plants to be able to take home. There were smiling faces and staff available there to ask questions. I like that it was clean and not so much of wet floors. I like this location because it doesn't get crowded with people.

Bought our Christmas tree ask the employee if we could leave it to get our other vehicle and they said yes. But when we went to pay the cashier man getting mad because we wouldn't talk to him in Spanish we kept answering in English so he said we need to take our tree soon as we pay for it. We will never shop at this location again

It is a-rainbow of colorful flowers and plants. It got so hot I started itching and got heat rash!

Nice selection of most of the usual plants, trees, and shrubs found growing around Houston. Very few to no exotic or oddball species. The staff tries to be helpful but have limited to no knowledge about growing or maintaining what they sell. Many speak little English. Overall a good place to find routine plants at good prices.

My husband was there today 11/30/2022 between 1:10 p.m.-1:40p.m. to buy a tree for a customer which happens to be a senior citizen community home (so he wanted a nice tree for them), when the employee was going to trim the tree the employee noticed the tree was cracked and advised my husband to pick another tree as the cracked tree would not last long. The manager saw him go to look for another tree and did not say anything. He was bringing the tree through the cashier and was then told by the cashier (Kathy) that he could not exchange the tree, the man who identified himself as a manager (Harrison) stepped in and told him he could not exchange the tree after the cahier was making a fuse about him exchanging the tree. My husband called me to tell me what was going on and the manager was trying to talk over him and arguing with him while my husband was talking to me. I called corporate and spoke to a Jennifer who had to call the store for them to exchange the tree. I asked my husband to get their names so that I could file a formal complaint and they refused to to provide him with any names acting very unprofessional and yelling while I was on the phone. It took another employee to give him their names as they refused to provide names. The only employee who was professional in assisting to get a tree was a guy by the name of Robinson. This behavior is unprofessional and unnecessary and when my husband told him he should be trained on how to deal with customers and be professional the manager told him they don't train on that. Not a good way for Houston Garden Center to do business with a landscaping company.

My first time at a Houston Garden Center. Lovely experience. I found red rose bushes my mother wanted for Mother's day. The cashier was super helpful and kind. Even in the Houston heat, the employee was very helpful loading 3 heavy bags of rose soil into my car. I recommend this place.

Kathy was very nice but the other people were trying to rush me and my friend out of the store 30 mins before closing. I understand letting us know that the store is closing but chasing us and giving us a stare down (being rude on top of that) is not quality customer service. Also, while we were checking out the guy was complaining about other guests in front of us, eluding to the fact he was talking about us as well.
Definitely felt uncomfortable and rushed. -
Horrible customer service. I visited this location yesterday to purchase a Christmas tree. I narrowed my search to two trees and asked the counter employees for their opinion of them. The trees are located on the exterior of the building in close proximity. I was told the company policy didn’t allow them to go outside the interior and was referred to a reluctant service person. I purchased a tree and cut for approximately $187. I informed the clerk, I had my own tree stand, for the placement. While they were cutting the tree’s bottom, I brought my stand for the tree. The manager informed me they no longer place trees in stands brought in, and since they had already cut the tree, could not issue me a refund. After a few, verbal exchanges, she hesitantly, agreed to my request. Now, as the tree was being carried to my SUV, I noticed it was not centered and the bottom of the tree wasn’t cut to fit the stand. After looking at me rudely, the service person corrected the error. Now remind you, the cut was purchased along with the tree. After the tree was put into my SUV, even after all the issues, I gave the service person a few dollars tip. The service person then told me, he wanted $10. I took my few dollars back and will never visit this location, again.

Great costumer service, very knowledgeable people. Everything was great except the older white cashier with an attitude towards everything

I visited there on Sunday, August 24th, and please be warned that a lot of the plants are infested with mealy bugs. They should not be selling any plants that have mealy bugs.

Update: beware plants are not guaranteed. So if you spend good money on large plants, shrubs, trees and they die I was told you are just out of luck. I bought two roses, planted the same location if Rose miracle grow soil. One doing well, one died quite quickly (only had about two weeks). It started looking bad immediately, and within two weeks it was gone. The roots were weak looking in the dirt as if it was just planted.
The prices are not much better than Home Depot or Lowe’s for the risk of being out of luck if uou get a bad plant and it dies.
Best bet for bargains is to go to Lowe’s in the back of the outdoor garden area they have clearance flowers. Although they look a little rough you can plant abs give a little love and care and they come back. I have such great success with these plants. I have them all over my yard. I call them my “rescue babies”!!
Just know at HGC you have a risk of being out of the money spent!!!!
The review below was about a year ago. Just another bad experience with them. Unsure why I went back.
PRICE IS NOT WHAT IT IS POSTED.
I typically love HGC. However, this location is really poorly managed. Often the shelves are bar or a bunch of old over grown plants. I was excited today to see they had a fresh order of mums. The sign on both ends of the table said $1.99 for qt. Another sign different table said 1.99 for qt. All Colors. So while there I grabbed 8 mums, and 8 other 1 qt. Annuals. When I checked out my bill was much higher then expected only 3 of the 16 were $1.99, mums 2.99 and 2 other plants were 3.99. All annuals! When I asked about it I was told the sign was in wrong place. Most of the tables, including where I got mine had a $1.99 for qt. Some did have certain plan names, that I did not notice I give them that. I asked to speak with manager and was told she will tell you the same thing. I again asked to speak with manager. Helper went to office came back out found another worker who was off loading flowers and could not speak English and told she was the manager. He translated to me that she said basically the price is what we ring it up as you can not go off posted prices!
I think I will find another place to buy my plants, if that is the case. Over all it was. Different of $12 really nothing, but it was the principle. It’s even happened before, price did not ring up as what I was posted and I was always I. A hurry and just went with it. I am just sick and tired of the poor customer service and the mentality that THE CUSTOMER DOES NOT MATTER! Wait until Amazon can deliver fresh flowers and these type of business go away and they will wish for the day they had loyal customers!!! -
Today my wife’s car and another car were both broken in within minutes of her entering the store. The manager, Richard Warren was completely useless and safety of the customers was not a concern at all. Avoid this place at all cost.

Don’t bother calling any of the Houston garden center location’s phone numbers. Whoever is running their phone line needs to be fired and replaced, they are losing you business. I was told the tree I was looking for wasn’t in stock (immediate no, so quickly it was clear she hadn’t checked) only to go to the location I called to find 20+ of that tree in stock.

You can find everything here when it comes to landscaping.
They have a wide range of annual and perennial flowers/ground cover, hanging baskets, scrubs and trees.
They also carry potting soil, fertilizer, root stimulator, flower pots and gardening tools.
I like their weekly ad that appears in the Friday issue of the Houston Chronicle. -
Bought a Christmas tree here. We asked it to be trimmed at base and they didn’t. Then It won’t take water after a cut at home. Tried to exchange it for another but “no refunds and no exchanges “ asked for another cut to see if that might work then they charged me another $3 to cut it again. Super not helpful and arrogant manager. Will never shop here again.

Wish I had read the reviews. This business is super overpriced. I stupidly paid for soil here and realized after going to Lowes I could have gotten the same soil for half the price. I drove back only for them to point to the reciept and give some excuse of the owner not excepting returns or exhanges. They know exactly how they are screwing over their costumers. Just go to any other gardening store.

My favorite place to shop. Great plants at awesome priced

I went to Houston Garden to buy all-purpose garden soil, but they loaded mulch instead. When I noticed the error and went back to resolve it, I was told all sales are final, even though the mix-up was entirely on their end.
To make matters worse, the store manager was extremely rude and unprofessional when I tried to explain the situation. Instead of owning the mistake or even offering a compromise, they were dismissive and made it clear they had no interest in helping.
It’s frustrating to spend your money at a business, only to be treated like you're the problem when they’re the ones who got it wrong. I won’t be shopping here again, and I recommend others double-check everything before leaving, because once you're out the gate, you’re on your own, even if they mess it up.
