HVAC reviews in Columbia, Maryland

I used to be with Pugs Fuel Oil. They were purchased by Griffith, and I have been unhappy since. They fill the oil tank and don't screw on the cap. They refused to fill my oil recently because I did not have a feature covered in my service contract, when they had no problem filling the oil all winter. They have been rude and inefficient. I'm switching to Warthen today. I can't tell you how disappointed I've been after receiving great service from Pugs for so many years. My sister uses Warthen and has been delighted with them. I would highly recommend using Warthen over Griffith!!

I have a (2) Gold level service contracts with Griffith and on Saturday 7/29 one of my AC units stopped working. I called at around 1pm and by 4pm my system was fixed. The technician, Bill Moore, was knowledgeable and diagnosed the problem to be a bad capacitor within minutes. If I could give more than 5 stars I would - great service!

I have mixed reactions about my experience. My system was put in and it works great, but it took 3 weeks to install and when I reached out to the company to see why no one had been out to the house in a week to finish I received no answer. Also the team left all of their boxes, coffee cups and left over supplies at the house. They were also suppose to take the old oil tank, but it's still there. The installers were however very kind, but this company needs to improve.
I have changed my review because the one of the items installed keeps failing and it seems as if no one at Griffith cares. Very disappointed! -
I had the pleasure of speaking with multiple women from their front office and all of them were as helpful and courteous as one would hope. Unfortunately, that's the extent of my positive experiences with Griffith Energy Services.
A service tech was sent out within 24 hours of scheduling a $164 diagnostic appointment for the loud vibrating noise coming from my furnace. After seeing for himself, he started the conversation by saying he just cleans and lubes systems and would have to call his boss to see what to do. He proceeded sit in the van for 15 minutes and then asked to ask to borrow some of my mechanics oil to try and lubricate the motor that, upon my own research, shouldn't be lubricated as the lubrication for the motor is self-contained. He said his boss told him that the motor/blower system combo would have to be replaced as an entire unit if lubing it didn't work. Fair enough. That his boss had to tell him where to find the product/serial number so they could see if the part was available and that they would call me very soon to tell me how much the replacement would cost and schedule the replacement. That's fine.
8 days later, I had waited long enough and called to see what the status of the work order was. What I suspected, which supposedly surprised the woman on the phone, was there was never any "follow-up ticket" completed by the tech, and no one ever reviewed my work order. She said she would print my case out and place it on the desk of the service manager and that he would call me first thing in the morning to straighten it out.
24 hours later, I called back to see why I hadn't been contacted, yet again. Two hours after that, I finally received a call from the manager who had no explanation of why it took more than 9 days to finally tell me it would cost more than $2200 and the part would need to be ordered. No thank you, I don't believe that you can be trusted to actually order the part nor complete the work within a remotely timely manner. -
Thank god we swithed to gas! They cannot keep your oil tank filled and the customer service is incredibly rude. Please go anywhere else - they don’t hold true to the $50 rebate when you run out of oil and when you ask to cancel your account he will continue to charge you. I have had to call every month for the last 6 months.

We were just serviced for our annual cleaning and tune-up on 7-29-2021.
Dale May, your service technician, has been here several times before, and this seemed to be yet the best service ever. He was on time and spent every minute while here working diligently on our furnace system. He certainly knows what he is doing, and is meticulous at his work. Having Griffith as our oil and service provider gives us great confidence knowing that you are always here for us. Kudos to Griffith and Dale for keeping your A+ rating with us! I have used Griffith to deliver heating oil for years. They have horrible customer service- deliver to the wrong tank every time. There are 4 tanks on the property, they cannot find the one that matches the tag number. They also did a furnace repair one day, had to get more parts for the next day, and left the furnace running with a crack in the heat exchanger, sending CO and fumes into our living space. Fortunately no one died but it was bad. Their response was, "that technician did not know what he was doing". Also, it is impossible to find out the cost per gallon of fuel. They are the worst.

STOLE part off new parts on our furnace to force us to get their services. STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM THESE GUYS

We’ve been having problems with our furnace for over a week now, the company the warranty company sent out weren’t very honest, they were just trying to make money. We decided to have Griffith come out and they’ve been amazing! I read reviews about them not returning calls or taking awhile to show up and we have yet to have that problem. They’ve actually been to our house 3 times in the past two days. Both techs were great. My boys love jerry. We plan on getting a service plan ASAP ( definitely worth it)

Day 12 no heat! No one from the Columbia office picks up the phone, nor do they return phone calls or emails. Their tech BROKE MY FURNACE and now they don't want to follow up and fix what they broke. Is this how you treat clients that have been with your company for years???

I am an automated delivery customer, but your service has failed to alert you that my propane tank was running low. Over the past two weeks, I have contacted your company multiple times to request a propane refill. Each time, I was assured someone would be out within the hour. However, no one ever arrived. This was not a one time occurrence as this has been going on for years.Every time we get low, we call and we are giving the runaround by your staff.
2/6/2026 Update: I’m out of propane again and I’m told I might be able to get a delivery today. It’s below freezing all day. I have pets and I had to take off work. Why can they not deliver when my tank is low. I have a sensor where they know the status. -
I am officially switching my service because their customer service has just gotten so horrible. I signed up for a budget plan and was told I would get automatic deliveries of oil and now here it’s five months since my last delivery and my tank is almost on empty . I try to schedule Schedule a delivery and it tells me that their records indicate I am not due for one. Gives me a phone number to call to try and get a delivery and it doesn’t even The correct phone number and the woman on the other end has the worst Attitude. Then I tried calling the regular number during normal business hours. nobody answers and nobody calls me back. They do not have transparent pricing, and would not even tell me how much it would cost to have my boiler checked. I ran out of oil this past winter and they came and gave me like 10 gallons and still didn’t come out to give me a full refill until three days later when I had already run out of oil again. This company has gone downhill so quickly.

Griffith is yet another example of private equity buying out mom and pop operations to create local monopolies so they can start price gouging. Last year boiler tune-up was 189, this year they told me it would be 429. I told them to get stuffed. Vote with your dollars and take your business elsewhere.

Had been a customer for 25 years. They were bought out and no longer provided the service they previously did. Making a phone call and getting the person/department you wanted is now a painful experience. I was scheduled for a delivery, pre snow storm forecast. The truck had no oil. 🤷. I scheduled for the next day. No one showed up. I canceled my account and switched providers. Called, a human answered, answered my questions, set me up with an account. I’ll be getting a delivery 4 hours after opening the account. Sometimes bigger isn’t better. Good Luck

I would not recommend this company to anyone. They are currently charging $1.27 over the Maryland average for number two heating oil. I have been dealing with a horrendous mess since a new furnace was installed at my mother‘s mobile home in September. They have had to have the company come back repeatedly to address issues with the brand new furnace. They automatically charged her for another one year service contract when the furnace install came with a two-year service agreement. They also automatically charged her for a tank insurance insurance policy on a brand new oil tank that comes with a 30 year warranty without asking us if we wanted an insurance policy on a brand new tank. When she got behind paying the bills because of all this nonsense. We’re dealing with. They cut her oil delivery off with no notification so she ran out of oil last Saturday night. The least they could’ve done was given her a phone call to say they were about to cut her off if she didn’t pay her bill. Every time I call this place I get a different different person that I have to explain. Explain the entire entire story to, because apparently nobody in that company talks to anybody else about what is going on. Take my advice. Do not get involved with this company under any circumstances or you will be sorry.

We have been customers since Griffith bought out our local provider several years ago. Since then, prices have gone up every year, by shocking amounts, while options for paying off their excessive bills are limited--unless you can first get to a zero balance. It's all about the money with this company; longtime customer loyalty and a history of paying off your past balances doesn't matter. Be prepared to pay $500 for an annual service plan and to absorb bills that could range anywhere from $400 to over $1,000, month to month, for the same house running at the same set temperature.

Had an emergency during freezing temps that left me without a heat source and a tech arrived and was quite helpful but couldnt fix the issue told me to schedule a service call.
I scheduled a service call, but unfortunately couldn’t be there, so my wife handled it.
I want to make it clear that when i scheduled for service, i told the scheduler on the phone that i wanted a full service workup, as this is going on our second year in the home, making it 2 years (minimum) since the last annual maintenance had been done.
I will admit fault for letting that slide too long, but not for what happened next.
The technicians arrived, told my wife there is no need to service it since its running fine, and when she pressed the point, and brought up this was the suggestion by the last tech AND the continued ignition errors we keep seeing, they remained firm on not performing the service i explicitly requested. She pressed the point further, and with a tech standing right there on speakerphone with their manager, the manager repeated what the tech said.
What kind of company waits until something breaks before trying to do any kind of maintenance?
I am standing here writing this, furious, as i continue to reset my boiler every 30 minutes to keep my house from freezing and getting burst pipes, because (best i can tell) the ignition sensor has gone bad.
Should damages to my house occur because the house freezes in the middle of the night or during the day while we work, i will be talking to a lawyer about it.
Absolutely insane. -
Great experience. I called them this morning thinking they may have time to come out this week. The weather has been nice so it wasn't crucial that they come out same day but to my surprise they were available and came out the same day to look at our unit. Ivan was very professional and nice. He had the part in his truck to fix the issue. It was done fast and efficiently. I have now signed up for their service plan to have them come out twice a year for maintenance. Once during a/c season and once during heat season. Couldn't be happier.
