Title: Disappointing Experience at Ginko Gardens - Peace Lily Infested with Gnats
During my recent visit to Ginko Gardens, I purchased a peace lily plant only to discover it was infested with gnats. This experience was disappointing and raised concerns about the nursery's maintenance standards. I hope Ginko Gardens addresses this issue promptly to maintain their reputation for quality plants. -
Beautiful selection of plants, I picked up a a few of my faves.
Unfortunately, the service was pretty...unfriendly. Not only were my wife and I ignored until we got to the register, we received heavy sighs and flat tones when we asked questions. The sales associates at the counter treated us like we were a burden. The store is small and packed tight, which I don’t mind, but there was an employee that made us feel like we were in the way while we were checking out plants, as if we, the customers were supposed to immediately get out of his way. “Excuse me” goes a very long way.
I’d love to go back; but I’d rather spend more money elsewhere than to made to feel uncomfortable while I’m shopping for plants. -
Magical little shop. I stopped in to buy one snake plant on my way home from work and stayed for nearly an hour perusing all of the beautiful plants. The staff is welcoming and knowledgeable. I left with several plants, some new ceramic pots and a heap of knowledge about house plant species and care. Can't wait to return!

Large selection of indoor/outdoor plants, plant and gardening related items, and helpful and knowledgeable staff. They will pot your new or old plants for a small fee. It's a neighborhood staple and great place to stop for your plant needs. Parking can be a challenge, however, you can usually find a spot on 11th or I Street no more than a block away.

My girlfriend and I stopped by Gingko Gardens after some online searching of where to buy plants in DC. We’ve stopped by a few other chain stores and have purchased some plants, but I wish we came here first!
They have a diverse selection of plants, pots, supplies, etc. and everyone is so kind. Plus, there’s tons of cute stuff that make gifting a plant or just buying one for your home so easy and beautiful. I’ve never experienced such affordable pricing.
They’ll even repot the plant and pot you purchase for a small fee. Major shoutout to the woman who reported our new 5’5” tree in a 16 inch pot. I was about to do it in the Lowe’s parking lot, but she took care of it for us. We got this plant on sale and picked a pot (which happened to be discounted due to some chipping). In total we spent $150 on what would have been $300+ everywhere else.
If you’re looking to buy a plant, this is the spot. -
Drove past this place once and said I’d have to go back. Well I did yesterday and it was so worth it. The staff was welcoming with the exception of a young lady working there. She wasn’t very polite but she did her job for the most part. There was a gentleman behind the register with longer hair and he was awesome! He answered all 100 questions I had lol and even carried a humongous bag of soil out the the sidewalk for us to put in our truck. I ended spending about $175 and it was worth every penny! Even got some bamboo ✨

A few caveats, it's higher priced than a big box store and it's a small business so there's limited inventory.
That said, what they do have is wonderful. I'm very picky and I found exactly what I wanted. Whoever does the ordering has great taste.
The people are knowledgeable and kind. They go well above and beyond.
I was nervous about repotting a plant and they helped me find the soil I'd need and talked me through how to do it. I definitely would have killed it had I not spoken to them.
The photo is my successfully repotted peace lily.
I will absolutely go back. -
This place is awesome, seems like every employee has good advice. One of my favorite businesses in the area I go there often and slowly my little apartment is getting filled up with beautiful foliage.
Have had several of their plants for months and they seem to be very healthy. Their prices are super fair. You can't really go wrong with Ginko Gardens! -
I will not be going back here due to the poor customer service. The lady at the register was rude and dismissive towards me. Upon coming to the register I put my item on the counter, said hello, and she said “Is that it?” in a very snarky tone. It made me uncomfortable. She then asked me if I wanted a receipt or bag, I took a second to decide and told her I’d just take the receipt. She then took it upon herself to “correct” me, and snarkily said “Please?” I was so caught off guard by this, it was so rude when all I was trying to do was purchase an item from this store. She then silently ran the transaction and gave me my receipt, didn’t thank me for my purchase or anything. But I made sure to tell her thank you, all I got was a “You’re welcome”. I’m not sure what her issue was with me, but it felt targeted because she was very friendly to the people in front of me who spent a lot more money. I’ve worked in customer service for 8 years, I have never been that rude to a customer - do better.

This review is hard to write because the staff was incredibly friendly and really helpful throughout my visit. However, I find this plant shop to be quite overrated. I cannot speak for the outdoor plants but the indoor / houseplant selection was quite limited and included almost no rare/tropical plants. Most if not all the pots in the store were dirty and/or had spider webs not to mention the colony of mosquitoes living on their wall of cash pots / plastic nursery pots.

Helped me appraise my fav houseplant after it was damaged for a home insurance claim. They are always so knowledgeable and so helpful. Favorite DMV gardening center!

my god this place is a plant paradise. the inside is brimming with houseplants of all shapes and sizes in every nook and cranny. also i was shocked at the reasonable prices. our total was only $60 for several herbs, an outdoor plant, a bag of potting soil, a large clay pot, and a medium sized ponytail palm. i can’t wait to go back, i was in awe of the effort put into this green gem. be sure to check out the upstairs too they have an incredible array of indoor plants.

Have been here multiple times and purchased several of my indoor plants from them. When you CAN get assistance they’re usually very helpful, it’s just the actually getting assistance that’s the problem. In store you will be waiting ages for someone to answer a question, and then they will be interrupted multiple times because they do not carry enough staff to manage the checkout and assist people.
Another completely unacceptable interaction, I would highly advise against customers on hold mid sentence. Asking them to hold at the beginning if the call or during an actual break in talking is one thing, but you literally asked me what I needed help with, and then put me on hold.
Yall already have questionable quality in plants, maybe do better with customer service. People will continue to buy sick/bad plants if the people selling it seems nice and like they actually care, like at least pretend for us. -
amazing customer service and selection! will definitely be coming back, and not just to see the kitty :)

I always find something wonderful to take home from this shop. Healthy plants and an amazing variety to choose from. Awesome selection of pots and soil. Make sure you visit the upstairs and the sun deck, as there are large houseplants up there to see. Love the layout of the outdoor nursery. Have received great service every visit. Miss seeing Ginkgo the shop cat on the checkout counter, R.I.P. sweet guy.

Nice neighborhood store if you want to buy some plants. However, I CANNOT RECOMMEND for landscaping services. I recently contracted them to remove some trees from my yard and do basic landscaping, and on this I would give barely one point only because once they finally did the work, it was good. But they were extremely uncommunicative and for weeks would not respond despite multiple emails from me. They finally gave me a date for works and then did not show up. Finally a month later after I threatened to cancel the contract and ask for my (incredibly expensive) deposit back, finally they said "oh, look, we found space for you tomorrow." The entire work took about max of 10 hours (one and a quarter days). Mark said there was "one job" ahead of me in July (already several months after I'd given them the deposit so I could "get in line"), which is just not credible given the small amount of work that my yard ended up requiring when they finally got to me in September. I should not have harangue them by email dozens of times and resort to threats to get some basic communication.
Actual work was good, efficient, they cleaned up the area and no complaints on that side, but incredibly frustrating and bad customer service. I will be looking elsewhere for my backyard work. -
To Whom It May Concern,
I am a regular customer at your store and appreciate the quality of your plants and gardening supplies. However, I am writing to express my concern regarding a safety issue I encountered this morning.
When I arrived, the sidewalk was heavily cluttered with potted plants, making it difficult to navigate safely. This situation is particularly dangerous given the high traffic in the area. I nearly collided with both an employee and the plants on the ground. When I raised my concerns about the safety hazard, the employee responded inappropriately, telling me that I had no right to be on the sidewalk.
Such a response was uncalled for. The appropriate reaction would have been to acknowledge the issue and apologize for the inconvenience. Instead, I was reprimanded for bringing up a legitimate safety concern. Unfortunately, I was unable to address this in person at the time as I was heading to work.
While I understand that the area in front of your store may not see much foot traffic from non-customers, it is important to ensure that the public sidewalk remains accessible and safe for everyone. Blocking the sidewalk not only poses a risk to pedestrians but also reflects poorly on your store.
I hope you will address this issue promptly to prevent any future incidents and ensure a safe environment for all. -
Great, friendly customer service. Lots of unique finds that set them apart from other nurseries/ plant shops in DC.

I cannot say enough about their amazing landscaping services. I hired Gingko to design and install a small garden. I love gardening and do a lot on my own, but wanted to see what a professional could do. Thomas spent a lot of time on the consultation, asking good questions to get a better idea of what I was looking for, and sent me lots of options for the design. In the end, I was just thrilled with the results. And even after install, Thomas has stopped by a couple of times to check in on the garden. Very happy with everything.

This shop persists because of its location. The indoor plants are fine, the usual varieties, though of varying quality (check the roots and soil). The outdoor selection is nice, especially seasonal plants.
The service is abysmal - they make you feel like you are in their way. Forget about a smile or a friendly chat. After years of tolerating it (including landscaping service), we will not be back. I'm looking forward to patronizing the new shops that have opened nearby! -
I used Ginkgo Gardens to landscape my front yard after it was ruined during a renovation. I was happy with the design and the plants, but it didn’t grow out well. They were planted too close together and got too big. I had them back the following spring for a clean up hoping they would trim and clean up the yard as well as check on the irrigation system they installed. I wasn’t home when they came, but all they did was weed the yard and didn’t touch anything else or mulch. I asked about mulching and got push back. It was also very expensive for what I got. My yard isn’t that big. I voiced my concerns and heard nothing back. Needless to say, I will never use them again.
