I will break this review down into the components I experienced:

Situation: Outdoor unit had a failed high side compressor (TRANE had units with 2 compressors) that needed replacement of the compressor or entire unit.

My initial call was taken by Katie who answered while out running an errand for work. Told me she would call me within 10 mins and she did. It was actually around 8 mins and although this may seem like a small item to mention it is important compared to the other 15 companies I reached out to it was huge to 1 - get a call answered when dialed, and 2 - to get a conversation going that quickly.

Katie scheduled a tech to come by within 36h which was faster than all other companies I spoke with (they said 2-4 days). Additionally ABR's focus of the call wasn't taking a credit card number to set an appointment - it was about the customers needs and setting real expectations to find a solution. THIS WAS HUGE and the main reason I continued to work with ABR given my situation.

Techs showed up on time; one experienced and one apprentice. They were friendly with me at our introduction and they were open to me joining them during their troubleshooting. I am curious by nature and like to see what is happening and learn something when possible. Once they found what the issue was they talked to me about options available along and their opinions based on experience and my questions.

We agreed to move forward with replacement of the compressor the next day. After they left I was able to get in touch with my homeowners insurance who, after review, agreed that the repair was applicable for coverage. I gave Katie a call and asked ABR to pause on the replacement of the compressor for now but told them I would pursue working with them on the next steps for the repair.

A few days later after getting feedback from the insurance company I reached back out to ABR and let them know I was going to move forward with replacing the outdoor unit. They had no techs immediately available to get the information needed to quote. They asked me to sit tight and they would be in touch with me shortly to schedule the next step. A few minutes later the owner got in touch with me and opened his schedule to come by personally to gather information to determine what units were compatible. He came the next day at 8am. After his visit I had a proposal from him within 12h.

ABR was able to schedule the replacement within a week (parts took time to get to the Va Beach area).

On the day of the replacement the techs quickly noticed there was a mix up on the unit that was picked up. It was a standard AC unit and not a heat pump which was what was ordered. ABR took full responsibility for the mistake even though it was not their fault (was on their suppliers end). They didn't try to play any games or encourage the install of the AC unit. They took ownership of getting a resolution quickly which they did. They were able to pivot quickly and organize the correct unit the next day.

The techs came back the next morning and installed it with professionalism and clear communication throughout. They set expectations that were clearly established and executed leaving me with very little questions during the install.

Throughout this entire process ABR has been extremely responsive, professional, friendly, and a pleasure to do business with. To all of the other AC service companies I reached out to - please take a lesson or two from ABR on how to effectively deploy customer service in a way that will win you return business over and over. They have a strong team with a customer oriented mindset that will only lead to growth and success.

Great guy, very straight forward and transparent with what you need. I had a company come out and charge me for a small leak and they couldn't find it. I called Thompson Heating and Cooling and they found the problem the same day they came out. It wasn't a leak it was my compressor. He replaced my unit. 10 out of 10 service.

Billy is awesome!! Fast, reliable, and reasonably priced.. everything you want in an HVAC technician. He showed up on time, explained the issue clearly, and had everything fixed quicker than expected. It’s hard to find someone who’s both honest and efficient, but Billy definitely delivers on both.
If you need HVAC service or repairs, I highly recommend him!

10/10 William charged a very fair price for parts/labor and was able to fix my furnace in a very short amount of time.

Additionally, he was easy to work with for an appointment and showed up on time so I didn't have to take more time off work like I did with other home repairs.

Today started with a phone call from my wife letting me know our heat pump outside was making a terrible noise. By the time I got home, the fan motor had begun squealing loudly and then completely stopped. With temperatures dropping, I immediately began calling HVAC companies—but every one of them said it would be several days before anyone could come out.

Then I called William Thompson, and the entire experience changed.

William reviewed the information I provided, gave me an extremely fair quote right away, and arrived within an hour of my call. He diagnosed the issue quickly, had the parts he needed, and had our system back up and running before noon. From the moment the heat pump failed to the moment William restored our heat, our indoor temperature only dropped from a comfortable 68° to 60°—a testament to how fast and efficient he was.

William is friendly, prompt, knowledgeable, and very fair with his pricing. It’s clear he’s eager to build a strong reputation in the community, and based on my experience, he absolutely deserves it. If you need HVAC work done right—and done quickly—I highly recommend giving William a call

Wonderful customer service

They have some really sharp technicians but you will pay dearly for them. If you want it done right they're the only show in town but they know that they have a monopoly.

Metro Mechanical is a full service mechanical/HVAC firm that does great work. They handle both of my properties for all mech service needs. Have used them for eight years.

Repair estimate to high and the solution would have not solved the problem. They wanted to replace an expensive item without the understanding of the real problem. They also said diagnostic charge was $89, but ended up being $100 per hour. Do not recommend metro for troubleshooting a Trane unit

Over the last 4 years Metro Mechanical has proven to be the most reliable contractor we have ever worked with. Donny is far and away the best representative Metro could ever have. His work ethic, the quality of his work and his people skills are simply top notch. I just really cannot say enough positive about Metro Mechanicals customer service. Thanks.

Called them about a gas leak in my crawl space. They came in did not give an estimate worked on the issue without consent, broke my water lines, and said it wasn't their fault. They were there all day and didn't fix the leak. Called another company and it was all done in a hour

Metro Mechanical’s equipment, service, technicians, and price is unmatched by any company in Hampton Roads area. After getting 10 quotes for a new central air system I chose MM....lowest cost, better unit (Trane) and it was installed in just a few hours! I since again got numerous bids and chose MM again for 2 tankless water heaters....I can”t recommend these guys enough...I wish there were more companies that offered other services that were like them!

These guys (and girls) are absolute pros. Every single time we have issues with our old units, they can fix them quickly. They aren’t pushy about replacing the unit — which most HVAC companies are. Highly recommend.
