We hired Chimney Sweep Specialists in late 2024 to perform work on both of our chimneys, including flashing, mortar and crown coating, cleaning, and water sealing — for a total of $5,050. Unfortunately, the work was poorly done and resulted in water intrusion, mold growth, and significant stress.

After the job, our living room chimney began leaking heavily — something we had never experienced before. We tarped it on **January 7, 2025**, and it has remained fully covered since then. Despite multiple spring storms, **there has been no water intrusion**, confirming the chimney (and the poor repairs) as the source of the leak.

We brought up our concerns to the owner Bill, who dismissed them by saying, "We had our best guy on the job" and claimed, “You could go through the work with a fine-tooth comb and find these errors and crumbling brick.” He also implied these issues weren’t serious by saying, “Those aren’t big deals.” This is unacceptable — especially considering multiple licensed contractors have now confirmed the poor workmanship, including bad flashing, cracked and failing mortar, and incomplete cleaning (with dangerous third-degree creosote left behind in a chimney we’ve never even used).

We were no interested in return visits — we chose not to proceed further with the company because we no longer trust their ability to correct the job they didn’t do right the first time.

This is not how any homeowner should be treated after paying over $5,000 for what was supposed to be professional work. Proceed with extreme caution.

To DIRECTLY RESPOND TO BILL:

To clarify and correct several false claims made in the owner's response:

1. **The chimney with the drywall patch is NOT the one that was leaking.** That is either a blatant misrepresentation or a deliberate lie. The leak came from the *living room chimney*, which had *no signs of prior damage or drywall repair*. The drywall the owner keeps referencing was on the *other* chimney — the one that has never leaked. This claim is irrelevant and misleading.

2. We hired your company to *fix both chimneys*, regardless of any issues that may have existed under previous ownership. When a customer pays over **$5,000** for professional chimney repairs, they are not paying for excuses — they are paying for results. Blaming previous homeowners for leaks or creosote buildup that still remain *after* your company claimed to have cleaned, sealed, and repaired both chimneys is both unprofessional and unacceptable.

3. Regarding the $500 tip: That was given **as a courtesy before we discovered the extent of the poor workmanship**. It does not change the fact that the repairs were inadequate and caused additional water damage. Since then, we have submitted formal complaints to both the **Better Business Bureau** and the **Oregon Attorney General’s office** to address these serious concerns.

Rather than taking responsibility, the owner has chosen to deflect, blame previous homeowners, and minimize the problems we experienced. Homeowners should not have to chase down and fact-check a contractor’s work after paying thousands for repairs that *should have been done right the first time*.

We stand by our review and urge others to *proceed with extreme caution* when considering this company.

They were really amazing! We never had a fireplace before, so they showed us everything we needed to know. They worked around our 1 and a half year old son and was really kind to him. They we're honest about what needed to be done and what didnt. We really appreciated the work they did for us. We highly recommend this company and will be using them in the future -Winter
Well its next year and it has really been a hard time.... we had some things wrong with the chimney and needed them to come out asap. As this is our main source of heat. We have also fallen into some financial trouble lately but they gave us a huge discount! We were shocked how much they took off. They dont understand how much that means to us. We were shocked that they helped us the way that they did. We will forever go through these guys. We appreciate you all so much!

They provided us with wonderful service. Everyone we worked with was timely and honest about what worked really needed to have done on our fireplace and chimney, (rather than doing unnecessary work just to do it). Their quality of work was great, while still being affordable. And, every employee we worked with was friendly and knowledgeable. We will definitely ask them to work on our house again.

The Chimney Sweep folks were easy to work with, got the job done quickly, and they were very competitive price wise.

Had a great experience getting our chimney cleaned by CSS! The sweeper showed up on time and was very friendly and professional, and did a great job explaining some draft issues that was contributing to our house getting smoky when there was a fire in the fireplace. They also got us scheduled really quick for it being what I imagine is peak service call season. I've already recommended them to a friend! Would happily call them for service again.

Chimney Sweep Specialist installed a new cap with damper on our brick chimney. The handle runs down the inside and is easy to open and close and should provide better seal again weather when not in use. They removed the old rusty one from inside. The technician was courteous, quick, and did a great job explaining what he did and how to use the new damper.

Bill (the owner) was extremely responsive and did a great job communicating with us about the project. They even managed to get me in earlier than expected.

Would highly recommend.

These guys are awesome! On-time, clean up the expected mess AND provide masonry services! Masons are hard to find! We only needed chimney cleaning this year, the best way to keep your house safe!

I found Bill Trapnell (the owner of the company) with his ladder up in my back yard last week. He was standing on the roof outside my daughter's window. When I confronted him he refused to spell his last name, but indicated he was the Operations Manager. I called the company, and he answered the phone. Turns out he doesn't have an office staff and is the owner of the company.

Also, I don't have a chimney. He claimed he had meant to be at my neighbor's house, but I didn't validate that with my neighbor. I've filed a police report. Unprofessional, do not recommend.

I wanted to take the time, on the behalf of the Edwards clan, to thank Mike and this wonderful company. This was my wife and I’s first time building a patio for our home, and Mike made it extremely easy to understand the process and what it was going to take to get the job done. He worked with us on pricing and truly made our backyard one you would have to see to believe.

He’s a great man and I would recommend this company to anyone so they can experience that same, magical feeling for themselves. Thanks everything you’ve done for my family, you being a standup guy, and truly making our house feel like a home.

Scheduling: They were flexible and helped work around my schedule, outside of their normal appointments in my area.
Professionalism: The sweeper (chimney technician?) was prompt, did a thorough job and clearly explained some basic tips and usage directions to me when I asked. He offered suggestions and a quote for further upkeep but was never pushy or giving me some doomsday scenario if I didn't get it done ASAP.
Price: From all internet searches and comparisons, the price was reasonable and fair.

Did not show up for appointment and did not call me back to reschedule.

Chad came by a few years ago for duct cleaning, and I had a good experience. Recently, I called him to schedule an appointment for dryer vent cleaning. He showed up and told me that he would be back the following day because they did not have a long ladder to reach the roof.
Chad was supposed to return the next day but didn't show up. I contacted him, but there was no response. I wish he had informed me ahead of time, so I could have reached out to other companies for an appointment. It was a waste of time. We are unable to use our dryer until the duct is cleaned out due to safety issues. When running a business, don't forget your original intentions.
