I am so glad I found Cost Plus Heating & Air in North Portland! I called Steve a couple years ago when my furnace stopped working and he showed me how to fix that particular problem myself. When the furnace stopped working again this week, I did what he taught me. It still didn't work but I felt much better about knowing what I was talking about when I called him again. He fit me into his schedule the same day I called and gave me multiple fix options. Just a good reliable, up front, honest guy - I will be calling him ANYTIME we have an HVAC issue. I can't say enough good things about Steve and Cost Plus Heating & Air!

Very happy with the AC installation by Steve and his team. Our job required additional work from an electrician and Steve coordinated that effort as part of the installation process. This resulted in all work completed in one day which was great. In addition, the installation was done up to code and appears to be very high quality. Highly recommend Cost Plus Heat & Air.

Steve and his crew were very professional and completely replaced our furnace in just two days. He was very helpful and we had a very pleasant experience. I would recommend Cost Plus Heating to everyone.

Steve installed a new heater and AC for us in our new home this year and we can't say enough good things about the entire experience. Because of supply chain issues outside of Steve's control, our units were delayed. Steve helped fix up the existing AC to keep our house as tolerable as possible during the awful summer heat and then found an alternative unit to keep us going with AC ahead of the second big heat wave. He even showed up during the first heat wave (with 115 degree temps!) to try to fix our AC even though he'd been working almost 24/7. He got us set up with a heater to keep the house comfortable until our new unit finally arrived, and then came ASAP to get everything installed. We would give 20 stars if we could--thank you so much!

Steve was such a great person to work with! Cold winter day and Steve came as quick as he could, made me aware of a possible warrantee that I might have available and then even had the needed part in his truck! He had my house back and warm before I knew it !

I have had three very pleasant experiences with Cost Plus. Their scheduling may be a bit rough, but the service and price are out of this world. They They will be my go to for HVAC as long as I live in this area.

This was the best service interaction we have done on our home. THE BEST. Response time was so fast, and when Steve came out to quote our job he did two things other salespeople have NEVER DONE: 1) he explained how others would try to upsell the job, and 2) he didn't bag on our current furnace situation (which everyone else did). I like that! He was honest and didn't have to give us a "gloom and doom scenario". The install of our AC was so fast and I can say OUR HOME IS CHANGED FOR THE BETTER.
Cannot recommend them enough!!!

Second review for Steve/Cost Plus, a year after the first one: He's a hero! He fixed a suddenly dead air conditioner on a scorching day when I'm sure no one else would have been able to come out ... wow, same day service? and told me what to do before he got there, to keep the unit from burning out. He was able to fit me in between other jobs, which says a lot about how he takes care of his customers. It was great to learn he works on ductless mini-splits, and tankless water heaters ... I'd recently had someone else in on the minisplit, and while they did fine, I'm really glad to know I can call on Steve for all my HVAC/water appliances.

It doesn't get much better than this... Steve came by on a Saturday, did what was necessary and no more (no extra costs! No surprises!), and thoroughly explained what he was doing. His fees were more than reasonable. I had to wait a couple weeks, since my needs were maintenance vs. emergency, but that seemed completely fair considering the busy season--and seeing how he was off and running to take care of two "no heat" calls after my house, on a late weekend afternoon, tells me a lot about his responsiveness. As others have said, customer for life! I know I've got a few years left on my furnace, but when it does need replacing? I know I'll call Cost Plus, 'cause I'll feel confident of getting a fair deal.

I can't say enough great things about Steve and Cost plus heating and air. I have used his company for air conditioner repair, and installation of a mini split in my old Portland home.
He is always prompt, professional, and exceptional at what he does.
This is the way small businesses are supposed to run.
He knows his stuff, remembers clients and is reasonably prices.

Steve was great. We had a short timeline to replace our furnace and water heater and he made our schedule on budget and on time. Just an overall great experience. Highly recommended.

They did a great job installing Central AC for us. They were booked out quite far, but that's every good contractor these days. Steve's quote was competitive, and he did not go over the quote even though supply/shipping issues meant he had to order a different unit than originally planned.

Steve and his son did a fabulous job from beginning to end! They upgraded our oil furnace to gas in one day and part of the morning next day. Steve coordinated with NW Natural gas and ordered the gas line immediately after install. He even scheduled final inspection and was present for it too. Cost Plus does not disappoint!!!!!!

I contacted Steve for an estimate to replace the original 56 year old gas furnace and to add electronic air cleaner & central air conditioning, and new water heater. He showed up on time and was thorough with his inspection and explanation. Several days later I received the estimate and we scheduled the installation. He referred me to an electrical contractor for a 200 amp panel I wanted and they coordinated their jobs/inspections to minimize any disruption. Steve and Mark (who works with Steve) were professional, timely and showed a level of customer service I haven’t experienced in a very long time (I’m 61 and know the difference). They made sure we understand how to operate the system to maximize its operation and maintenance. I’ve been sending pictures of our new system as if we had a new baby because we’re so pleased. If you value quality give Cost Plus Heating and Air a call!

--We have used Cost Plus for Furnace repair, thermostat installation, AC installation and tankless water heater installation. Consistently the best price, high quality and prompt service. When we have had our furnace go down in the past, they have always found a way to fit us in and get it up and running again.

I know it's been said in many reviews before, but it needs to be said again. Steve and his team are some of the best I've ever come across. From the office crew to the field crew - everyone I interacted with was honest, trustworthy, punctual, professional, communicative, transparent, accurate and efficient. I had Cost Plus install a gas furnace and AC and couldn't be more satisfied. I want to both thank Steve and his team, but also recommend anyone in need of HVAC work to contact Cost Plus first.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Steve and Cost Plus Heating on three different homes over the last 15 years. Steve installed new furnaces in three different houses, and an air conditioning unit in one. He is a pleasure to work with, honest as the day is long, hard-working, incredibly knowledgeable and competent, uses high-quality products (exclusively American Standard), is responsive to emergency and weekend calls, and has very competitive pricing, with no extra padding or sales tomfoolery. Here's one quick example - on the last job he did for me, he deducted $50 off the final bill because he finished the job and hour or so faster than he thought he would. How many contractors would ever do that?

Here's another example from a recent job. I got two different bids, because Steve was temporarily not available, my furnace was out, and it was winter. Contractor A, a well-established Portland company, gave me a bid that sounded a bit on the high side, and offered a brand of furnace that I soon found on consumer reports had a very poor rating. (Tip - do your homework on this!)

Cost Plus heating, on the other hand, gave a bid that was significantly lower than contractor A, and used a well regarded brand-name product, American Standard. I of course chose to work with Steve, and and once again am glad I did.

Our 15 year old furnace died at the beginning of 2023. We contacted several local HVAC companies for repairs. We called two other HVAC companies before reaching out to Cost Plus. Those other repair techs from other companies came out and kind of just... fumbled around with the furnace without solving the issue. Cost Plus Heating & Air stood out because they sent a friendly, competent, and curious engineer to solve the issue. They gave us a quote to solve the immediate issue, and also suggested some next steps as far as full replacement of aging furnace and water heater. We then, just to make sure, gathered competitive quotes from other HVAC companies. Once again, Cost Plus Heating & Air stood out among the crowd because of the comprehensive quote, and their willingness to share their professional opinions about how they believe we should move forward, and their low pressure sales pitch.

Fast forward to this week, we noticed a small amount of water at the base of the furnace. A quick call to Cost Plus Heating & Air and they came out and fixed the leak under warranty. Happy to recommend Cost Plus Heating & Air to anyone who needs HVAC or water heater repairs. Give em a call!

My experience with Cost Plus Heating couldn't have been better. Steve went above and beyond to make sure that he got me the best deal possible on a part for my furnace, which ended up saving me $800. He was super friendly and kind with every interaction and quick to get back to me. I'll definitely contact him the next time I need anything!

Would recommend this business to anyone! Owned, ran, and operated by a wonderful, honest, and hard-working man named Steve! I can’t say enough how much Steve impressed me with his punctuality, effort, and work ethic. He’s not only the owner but he obviously is the main worker. My heat went down and he came over straight away and was able to fix my furnace within a day! He provided spare parts, from his own supplies, to keep my furnace working while the new parts were shipped. Then he came back promptly to finish the work and get new parts installed.
