HVAC reviews in Anchorage, Alaska

After trying two other local companies, I've now been using Anchorage Plumbing and heating for the past 8 years. They have excellent customer service, are always on time, professional, do an excellent job with both maintenance & repairs, and are competitively priced. They take the time to explain things and are always friendly. I trust and highly recommend these guys.

I have used Anchorage Plumbing & Heating in the past and always had good luck with them. Plumbers are usually courteous, prompt and knowledgeable. Two weeks ago I had them out to clean my furnace. I was selling my house and wanted this done prior to moving. Plumber Joe came out and said he was doing an inspection. I told him I just requested the furnace be cleaned and they were running a special so I asked for that. He said no, he was going to do an inspection. I also asked him to replace a cap to the shut off valve behind my washer. He said he didn't have a cap so would replace the whole valve. He didn't even offer to go get a cap and replace it. He said I needed to replace my garage heater (it was cracked) and my hot water heater because it was leaking gas and had a small leak on the top. He wanted to give me an estimate and when I told him I was moving he wanted the names of the new owners so he could call them. Seemed he just wanted to sell me something.
That "cleaning" and replacing the valve cover cost me $230. Another plumber told me he would have done the same thing for about $120. I felt I was ripped off.
I had another plumber come and fix the hot water heater for a few bucks. He said it did not need to be replaced. I had him replace the garage heater as well.
I called Anchorage Plumbing & Heating and spoke with a manager about my concerns. He said he would talk to Joe and get back with me the next day. It has now been 10 days and I haven't heard a word. I'm not sure I trust Anchorage Plumbing and Heating. -
So, I am a property manager in Anchorage and have used Anchorage plumbing and heating a handful of times. Generally, it is a decent experience. They are more expensive than a lot of others, but are generally pretty timely and responsive.
On 5-10 we called because there was a water heater dripping, pretty steadily onto the floor and into the crawlspace from the water heater. They were able to get a tech out there that day, although it was later in the day. The tech called and advised they could fix it, but it would be a few hours work and a $300 part. It was about to be after hours, so the tech said they could get it scheduled for tomorrow so it isn't after hours. Awesome, thank you.
Tomorrow comes, and I don't hear anything for the entire day so I call them at 2pm to see what's going on and make sure we are good to go. The front desk staff answers and says they cant get anyone today, but can tomorrow. Keep in mind the water has been continuously dripping at this point and the crawl space is getting pretty filled up with water. It was a very steady flow and not a slow drip.
I was slightly annoyed, but I get it, people get busy. Tomorrow comes again (5-12-2023) and I called them at 3pm since I still hadn't heard anything. I speak with the same lady, whose name I admittedly don't remember. She advises they can get me on the schedule for Tuesday. I am obviously confused, since I have been on the schedule for two days now and nothing has been done.
I remind her that there is water actively leaking into the crawl space and filling it up, and I am transferred to a new person who advises me that they don't have anything available, but they might be able to get me after hours, at the after hours rate even though I have been left hanging for the last two days while my crawlspace fills with water.
Suffice to say, we will never be using Anchorage Plumbing and Heating again for any service. Its a shame too, since their water heater install was usually a little cheaper than competitors.
2 stars since the other experiences were okay. This one was just terrible.
(Update)
I had our Operations Manager call them back since I was incredibly annoyed, and admittedly did not want to talk to them. Apparently the lady I spoke with the 2nd time spoke out of turn, and we were able to get a tech scheduled to go out there this evening and take care of it. Then Monday they will see if it can be billed for regular time and not after hours. I will update again once I know more.
(2nd Update)
Today (5-16-23) I received a call from Jeremy (the service manager) about the incident. Jeremy advised that he had a meeting with his staff about the incident and that it would not be happening again, and that is not how they treat their clients. We did receive the bill, and it was not billed at after hours prices and they were able to take care of the issue that day after I had called.
I am updating my review to 5 stars due to the follow up provided by the team, and that they were able to take care of the issue even if it took a bit longer than I would have liked. I will consider this a fluke in their operations, and appreciate the follow up from the management. -
We had an emergency furnace failure. The technicians who came quickly to assess the problems were very professional and helpful in getting to the issues at hand. Will was one of the technicians and was very considerate and helpful in getting everything completed as quickly as possible. We appreciate Anchorage Plumbing & Heating and would highly recommend them.

Wow! Plumber Isaac came on time, worked fast and efficiently. He was a great communicator when my input was requested. He cleaned up after himself and left us with beautiful well working plumbing! Couldn’t ask for more!

Dispatch was friendly and responsive and the plumbers they sent were professional and knowledgeable. I had a leak in my tub, the first visit they replaced the gasket in the drain with the proper size gasket, they told me to keep an eye on it and if it still leaked to call them. On the second trip they found that it was also leaking through another gasket which will eventually be a bigger repair but they were able to do a temporary fix until I can get the funds to repair it. I was happy that they were able to give me an option as these things are always unexpected! Happy to have a "go to" plumber for the next unplanned repair!

Received mail coupon for furnace cleaning special. Showed 1/2 hr late, no biggie. Still summer so the house wasn't calling for heat. When it called for heat, furnace didn't work. Called and they showed up quickly. They said a switch had been switched on the water pump causing the issue, said they didn't do it, must have been us. The furnace hadn't been touched since they last did. After all, I don't know anything about furnaces, no reason to touch it.
Asked tech to have manager call me, said he would. They never called and I just received the bill in the mail. If they handled their business, they would still have mine. Best wishes. -
We called Anchorage Plumbing and Heating's 24hr call line around 3am in the morning for help with a leaking water heater tank. Within 30 minutes, we had a plumber, Jessie, on site to assess the situation. He was professional, courteous, and spent a few minutes answering my husband's questions after he fixed the valve. Yes, it was expensive, but money well spent when you consider it's the water heater tank. Thank you for being available. I would recommend this service to others and would call them again for other plumbing needs.

We’ve been using Anchorage Plumbing and Heating for over 30 years and have always been happy with the quality of their service. Recently, we had our annual maintenance check. The technician’s name was Raven and I was very impressed by her professionalism and competence. She thoroughly cleaned the burners, conducted a multipoint check of all systems (we have 6 zones). She took many photos and pointed out one thing we needed to address (providing a brace to our hot water heater so it doesn’t rock in an earthquake). I’ve never written a review before but I felt Raven’s competence and assistance was amazing. Thanks!

The tech Jeremy was a very nice fellow. He fixed the furnace quickly and efficiently he was personable and explained the operation to fix the furnace to me as he was doing the job. Also I was told I would have to pay for a overtime job due to the high call volume the company was experiencing during the late fall when all the boilers were starting to turn on for the winter. This extra cost was expected by me and I was happy to be able to get some help. But I received a call two hours later to inform me a tech could come in 20 minutes if I was available. I made hast and arrived home in 15 minutes and the company saved me 150 dollars. Thank you anchorage plumbing and heating for employing a great tech and helping your customers as much as you did for me.

I had a leaky garbage disposal. I got an appointment within an hour or so after my initial phone call. (By comparison, another company in town never returned a call even after I spoke to the dispatcher twice on different days.) The appointment process was fast, the plumber (Jesse) was prompt and courteous, and he completed the job quickly. He even took time to check some other pipes I had questions about. I was surprised how reasonable the price was (I have been "taken to the cleaners" before by other contractors). Thank you for your job well done!

We love Anchorage Heating and Plumbing. They have been our plumbers since 1996. They have kept our highly temperamental furnace running efficiently, are always professional and friendly. When we remodeled our kitchen in 2015, they put in a gas line so I could go from an electric range to a gas one. When we have had an emergency they have been quick to respond. We have never been unhappy with their work. They are reasonably priced and very fair. We highly recommend them for all your plumbing needs.

I called them for a simple job of stopping my kitchen faucet drip. I told them right up front that if the faucet needed to be replaced I would want the very basic model they carry on their truck. When the guy came he had no faucet on his truck. He went to get one, no charge for travel time. Came back, had the wrong one, wouldn't fit. So another trip, no charge to me. The faucet he brought was not at all what I wanted. In addition, they charged me over double what the exact same faucet is at Home Depot. Then he was going to charge me two hours labor until I pointed out that changing out a kitchen faucet takes less than one hour. He backtracked immediately and only charged me one hour. I called and spoke to the owner about what transpired. She told me he was an apprentice. She said she would check into the new faucet dripping for a few seconds after being shut off, and that she would find out about the rest of the service call and suggested a discount might be in order. Then she called back and told me it was normal for a faucet to drip momentarily (which I concur), but there was no mention of a discount considering the exorbitant price of that faucet when I had emphasized that I only wanted the most basic model. I will never use them again.

We called Anchorage Plumbing & Heating, when we wanted to replace our water heater, because they first repaired, then replaced our original 1963 furnace, going to some trouble, looking in the archives, for solutions, and we trusted their work. We had them out in February, they discovered our galvanized pipes, and said we needed to replace those, as well as the water heater. We chose to wait until June, because it was a big job, and we wanted to stay in our RV while the work was done, with our nervous dog. The short term employee, who can came out, and did the original bid, did not explain the procedure, and our responsibility very clearly.
End of May, we called them back to schedule our big pipe job. When the “A Team” arrived at our home, and saw our bathrooms were NOT demo’ed, and ready, and the guys heard who gave us our estimate and instructions, they let us know what needed to be done, before they could start, we called our Fairbanks kids to get up here, with their workshop of tools, and bring all your skills, and they did. Our work was done the next day, by midnight, and we called the company back 47 hours later, for our appointment.
We don’t think they expected us to call so quickly, and yet, they put us on their schedule, and our journey to beautiful new pipes, and a professionally installed, municipal inspection approved water heater, began. It helped to have two adult kids, able to work side by side, with the plumbers, and we were told most jobs don’t finish, as quickly as ours did. We were so appreciative of the wonderful, top notch work done by Chris, Deacon and Kyle, the fellas we saw every time, and everyone who also helped those three fellas out. I feel bad for taking almost a month, to write my review, and special thanks to Chris for mentioning the senior discount, not thinking we qualified, lol, cause that saved us an extra $500. That was really sweet.
We definitely recommend Anchorage Plumbing & Heating, for work you can trust, and while the beginning was tough, it quickly sorted around to a terrific experience. I’m happy both me and my husband got new beautiful bathrooms, cause we realized we absolutely needed that to happen, and a laundry room hallway, that is gorgeous, but what matters most, is the plumbing you cannot see, being up to code, and exactly what we need, for our home to work best. Thank you very much. Deb & Mike McIntyre -
Great service, I would absolutely recommend hiring these guys! I found out my water heater was spraying water all over my crawl space late Saturday night. It was like opening the door to a sauna so I frantically started calling all of the 24 hour plumbers in town. Anchorage Plumbing and Heating was the only one to pick up. That alone would be worth a 5 star review, no one else even called me back! Shout out to Isaac, he showed up quick and fixed the leak in no time. He was very knowledgeable and told me everything he was doing. He was also helpful in telling me what type of water damage might have occurred and recommendations on how to follow up to get it properly fixed. They definitely earned a lifelong customer!

We have had them out several times to fix plumbing issues on our old boiler. A+ customer service every time. They took the time to listen to my armature diagnostic of the situation. Quickly identified the problem, and fixed it. I am just really pleased with them.
-
Misdiagnosed the issue and tried to upsell me for a new furnace at more than $6000 when the repair that was actually needed was a new control board and less than an hour of work and total cost $1050. Unethical company. Will not be doing business with them again when they try to take advantage of customers during an emergency.
-
Worst dispatch dept. I've ever delt with. Customer for years, when I have an emergency, they wanted payment in advance, for labor, and couldn't get to me for a week. They charged me $330 for a diagnostic visit which included the technician being on the phone with Navien while having a smoke in his truck for over an hour. No discount for veteran, over 70, no mercy.
The company I called quoted me less than half the labor cost, and will be here tomorrow. Enough said. GO ELSEWHERE. -

I wouldn't reccomend for after hour services. The only issue with my heater was that the fan needed to be cleaned and this technician failed to troubleshoot it correctly and left me with no heat and told me I had to get my whole furnace replaced which would cost 4,000. I paid 240 for his service, he was only there for 35 minutes because he wanted to rush to get out and didn't want to fix the problem and just told me that I needed a new furnace. I really don't think that paying 240 for him to incorrectly diagnose my furnace was the right thing to do. On top of that he told me he was going to give me a discount but because I said something he didn't like he took it back and ended up double charging my card. I told him I'm a single mom and haven't had my daughter home because the heater wasn't working, for 2 days, and he left even though it was as simple as cleaning out my fan. I'm not happy with the service I received at all and he was very disrespectful.

Cleaned the fan out that night and heater is still working. It just needed the clean but said it needed to be replaced.
I understand the rate I had to pay but if I'm paying someone more because of an emergency he could have done better. He came over, took my furnace apart within 35 minutes and told me I needed a new furnace just because he was in a rush to leave. The next day my neighbor cleaned the fan and put it back together and it has been working ever since. I could have gotten my daughter back that night if the technician actually cared to help with the situation and just cleaned the fan out, thats what I paid for right? But instead my neighbor had to do the job for him. He wasn't trying to help at all, he just wanted to get paid for being lazy.
If all he had to do was clean the fan to get it working, thats what he should have done so that my daughter and I can have heat.

I still have the same furnace, and it's still operating from my neighbor cleaning the fan. -
After the technician came and diagnosed the problem I scheduled an appointment for their recommended fix. The day of the appointment I get a call that they hadn't ordered the part and I need to pay for rush shipping to complete the job. I declined. It's a bummer that I had waited on a necessary fix only for them to drop the ball and try to make me pay extra.
